The Office? Meh.

About this time last year, I first heard that Steve Carrell was leaving The Office. There was some speculation that the show might end its broadcast, but there were also rumors that the Michael Scott character might be replaced so the show could continue. At first, I thought it would be great if Steve Carrell was replaced it might breathe new life into the show, but I now am beginning to think it is time to just hang up the cleats.

Like a lot of people, I've felt that the show has been largely uninteresting for a while now. I liked the first three seasons and the fourth season grew on me to a point where I consider it a near equal with its three older siblings. But since then (the show is currently in its seventh season) I've watched more out of habit and loyalty than out of appreciation for the show. There hasn't been any real direction to The Office (Michael starts his own paper business only to return to Dundler-Mifflin an episode later; Jim becomes a co-manager only to return to salesman a few episodes later) and it has heavily relied upon classic sitcom tropes like wedding episodes, babies-being-born episodes and gimmick episodes (like the most recent episode: Threat Level Midnight).

In a way, I felt that the current Office season was a return to its roots (though in an inferior form): A salesmen (andy) in love with the receptionist (Erin) who is dating another office co-worker (Gabe). This has happened before (Jim in love with Pam who was engaged to Roy), but it provided solid center point around which the show operated. The problem is that the show won't go ahead and make this new love triangel the focal point. We still have to hear about Jim and Pam who, incidentally, are now the most uniteresting characters on the show. I'm more interested in the characters who have traditionally been in the background because they still have story left to them.

I'm all for The Office continuing after Steve Carrell leaves, but I hope the writing and story arcs improve, otherwise I think I may really stop watching this time. No more empty threats.

From Zada> I cannot let a post about 'The Office' go by...My feelings are very similar to yours - Season 1,2,3, and (maybe)4 are great. Catchy one-liners, awkward situtations, interesting story lines, and a great selection of side characters - I love the guy who plays the CEO of Dunder Mifflin.

When Steve Carrell announced his leaving, I thought "Thank God. They can end this show before it becomes unwatchable"...When NBC announced the continuation of the series w/o Michael Scott, I vowed to no longer watch the show after this season.

I have watched every episode this season and I am so glad that Michael and Holly ended up together. I love that Todd Packer got fired and that despite having no relevant job duties, Ryan the Temp makes it into almost every episode. I wish they would do one more great Dwight v. Jim episode, but I doubt they will.

On the flip side, Parks & Rec came back w/ avengence. Smart, funny, and faster paced. So much better than last year's season.

I just recently started watching Parks & Rec. I've only seen three or four episodes (on Netflix) but I'm enjoying it.

As goes the current season of the Office, I really enjoyed the episode up until Chrismas, but sense then it seems a lot more forced. A Dwight V. Jim episode would be awesome.
