Top 5 Friday: Songs I Never Turn Off

Recently, while in the car, "Under the Bridge" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers came on and I nearly vomited. I love the Chili Peppers, but "Under the Bridge" has been so overplayed during the last 20 years that I can't stomach it anymore. I turn the station every time it is played. It's a great song, but it over-saturated the radio somewhere around 1996. That got me to thinking, what are the songs that I never get tired of hearing? Here are the top five songs I never get tired of hearing.

5. Sabotage by Beastie Boys--There are no words I can offer. Simply must be heard.

4. Longview by Green Day--Although they have gone on to do some really ambitious lyrical themes, this remains my favorite Green Day song. I love the rollicking bass line, the meloflous verses and the explosive [ahem] chorus. Should I live to 80, I will still shamelessly sing along to this song at the top of my lungs.

3. No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature by The Guess Who--I'm not really all that moved by the New Mother Nature part, but I'm so psyched by the No Sugar Tonight part that it carries over until the end. Such a cool song. Cool lyrics. Cool guitar. Cool bass solo. Cool random rock 'n roll vocals (bat-dadada dadada...) that isn't "na na na na" (no disrespect to Paul McCartney or Bruce Springsteen).

2. Song 2 by Blur--I love anything Blur does, but, like a lot of Americans, this was the song that introduced me to the band. I consider this song the "My Generation" of my generation.

1. Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles--One of the all-time coolest songs, it never, ever gets old. If only they would do some kind of sequel like

Honorable Mention: Loser by Beck; What's the Frequency, Kenneth? by R.E.M.; Pepper by the Butthole Surfers; Miserable by Lit; Open Road Song by Eve 6; Shimmer by Fuel; Anna Molly by Incubus; No One Knows by Queens of the Stoneage; Been Caught Stealing by Jane's Addiction; Sometimes by My Bloody Valentine; Honey by the Jesus and Mary Chain; Read my Mind by The Killers; Panama by Van Halen; Best of You by Foo Fighters; and plenty of others, I'm sure.
